PAGE, ARIZONA - ANTELOPE CANYON

Antelope Canyon is a place I doubt you have heard about but it was recommended by other RVers online that we not miss it while we were in Page.  The canyon is located just a few miles outside of Page on the Navajo indian reservation.  Included in the fees you pay to go to the canyon is a $6 fee to enter the reservation.  The company has a license with the Navajo to operate the tours on their land.  They load you onto specillaly designed pickups and haul you out to the canyon. There is about 2 miles of no road and total sand before you get to the canyon.  A normal car could not make it.

Antelope Canyon is what is called a "slot canyon", which means it is very narrow canyon etched through the sand stone in the desert.  It is totally dry except when they have their few rains each year when the water runs through the canyon.  Walking through the canyon is like walking on a beach because of the thick sand.  The canyon has been cut through the sandstone over millions of years and is simply beautiful.  The entire canyon is only a little over 100 yards long but there are different beautiful views every step you take on your trip through the canyon.  Most of the beauty comes from the sunlight that filters in through the top of the canyon creating various shades and hues of color.  As I said, most have never heard of this canyon but it is one of the most beautiful things we have ever seen.  Because of the light (or lack of light) it is very hard to take pictures in the canyon.  The picture on the left is actually from their brochure.  The ones below were taken by us.
